Felexin®

Properties

Cefalexin, the active ingredient of Felexin® is a first generation cephalosporin with a broad spectrum bacteria activity. It is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and over 90% of the drug is excreted unchanged in the urine within 8 hours. The half-life is approximately 60 minutes in patients with normal renal function. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis will remove cephalexin from the blood.

Indications

Felexin® is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, bone, joint, dental infections and genitor-urinary tract infections, including prostatitis.

Dosage

Adults: 1-4g daily in divided doses; most infections will respond to a dosage of 500mg every 8 hours.

Children 5 years and over: 25-50mg/kg in divided doses or 250mg every 8 hours.
Children under 5 years : 125mg every 8 hours.

Side-effects

There have been reported: gastrointestinal disturbances, including symptoms of pseudomembranous colitis, transient hepatitis and cholestasis jaundice, hypersensitivity reactions, genital candidiasis, arthralgia, arthritis and joint disorders, slight elevation of AST and ALT, etc.
