Composition

Properties

Remycin® is a broad spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and certain other microorganisms. It exerts its action by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Remycin® is almost completely absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and its absorption is not affected by the presence of food or milk.
Compared to other tetracycline, Remycin® has low binding affinity for calcium and produces higher plasma concentration. Remycin® is highly lipid-solube so that it can easily diffuse into the various body fluids. Its biological half-life is about 15 hours after a single dose and up to 22 hours after repeated dose. Remycin® is mainly excreted in the urine but dose accumulate in patients with renal impairment. Doxycycline does not degrade to an epianhydro from as other tetracyclines do.

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and children over patients with severe renal impairment the dosage should be reduced by half. The duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection, clinical response and bacteriological findings. For acute infections the usual treatment period is 5-10 days. Generally, treatment should be continued for at least 3 days after the signs and symptoms of infection have disappeared.

Side Effect

Side-effects rarely occur and may include gastro-intestinal disturbances, skin rashes, photosensitivity reactions, and over-grow of nonsusceptible organisms (Monilia).
